Our ministries reach both inward and outward. As we nourish our own faith, we are strengthened to love and serve our neighbors and community.

Who We Are in the Greenbrier Valley

The “people presence” of St. James’ is felt throughout our town. We have members who serve on Boards of Directors of Greenbrier Valley Chorale, Greenbrier Valley Theatre, Carnegie Hall, New River Community and Technical College, Family Refuge Center, Lewisburg Literary Festival, Shepherd’s Center, Seneca Trail Charitable Trust, local Rotary and Ruritan clubs, Meadow River Long-Term Recovery Committee, and Greater Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation.

Others participate in and support agencies such as the Child and Youth Advocacy Center, Communities in Schools, Diocesan Reading Camps, Operation Christmas Child, Gwen’s Meals, and the Harm Reduction Program through Greenbrier County Health Department.

We work in concert with other community churches to support the Lewisburg Food Locker. Traditionally, our priests have been members of the Lewisburg Ministerial Association.

Outreach Ministries

  • Recovery Programs

St. James’ has been the home to several 12-Step recovery groups for more than 30 years. The church has given them their own room where they meet most days and evenings.

  • Gwen's Meals

In participation with the Shepherd’s Center, meals are prepared in our kitchen and delivered to local homebound seniors. St. James’ typically hosts four community-wide distributions a year.

  • Harm Reduction

Operating at the Greenbrier Co. Health Dept., this program serves any person from West Virginia struggling with addiction and seeking safe resources with which to avoid infection or overdose. Volunteers from St. James' support peer recovery coaches by enrolling new clients, keeping records and entering data, and by letting every client know that they are valued and supported.

  • Reading Camp

An outreach ministry of the Diocese of West Virginia, St. James’ hosts one week each summer for students entering grades 2-4. This exciting camp provides a comfortable, stress-free, failure-free setting for improving reading skills, self-confidence and developing a lifelong love of reading.

  • Global Health Ministry

Our parish partners with this international ministry, based in Minneapolis. Ministries include rolling bandages for medical professionals working in third world countries, supplying medical equipment such as orthotic boots, ace bandages, swabs, etc., and assembling layette kits for at-risk mothers and babies.

  • Christmas at Sea

Throughout the year knitters and crocheters work on hats, scarves and mufflers for Merchant Seaman who will not be home for the holidays. Each sailor receives a 'ditty bag' with 2 knitted items, 2 toiletry items and 2 candy treats, regardless of faith, country of origin or race.

  • Food Wagon and Locker

Found in the Narthex of the church, parishioners bring non-perishable food to fill the wagon to be taken to local Food Banks. Several times a year, St. James’ participates in distributing food to recipients in the community.

In-Reach Ministries

  • Parish Life

The heart of the fellowship ministry of St. James' Episcopal Church, this team focuses on strengthening the community of faith and fostering a sense of belonging through the ministry of hospitality. Fun activities, field trips, hikes, parish picnics, game nights, puzzle exchanges, soup suppers, Hallowe’en ministries, yard sales - the activities are limitless!

  • Prayers and Squares

This ministry creates quilts and afghans lovingly stitched by a team of dedicated crafters. Each completed project is given to anyone needing a warm embrace of God’s love. Additionally, parishioners say a prayer and tie a knot in the quilting threads during coffee hour before each quilt is delivered.

  • Ushers and Greeters

The first welcoming faces our visitors see! This is our special hospitality crew welcoming newcomers, making sure they are comfortable with the service, handling the offertory collection, and bringing up the elements for the Eucharist.

  • Feed the Flock

Cooks and chefs of all kinds provide meals for parishioners who may be shut-in or struggling with illness or life changes. Various members of the church sign up on a shared calendar to bring a meal.

  • Live-Streamed Services

Every Sunday at 10:30, plus special services or studies, we offer live-streamed services on Facebook or YouTube. Services are available live, as well as on-demand after the service concludes.

  • St. James' Altar Guild

The altar guild is a behind-the-scenes ministry team that prepares the altar for worship services. They keep the linens white, the candles lit, and the chalices full.

  • Hospitality

This hard-working team takes charge of: 1) Coffee Hour/Lemonade on the Lawn, which occur after 10:30am Sunday worship; 2) Pot-Luck Dinners; and 3) Receptions for anniversaries, funerals, or memorial services when requested by families.
